The Downtown Collection

Released December ‘20

The Downtown Collection is the second collection from designer Morgan Jones. Composed of seven unisex pieces, the collection focusses on a neutral palette embellished with pattern and highlighted through washed out tones. The collection was designed in order to function as a stand alone capsule wardrobe however each piece’s ability to work into a currently existing wardrobe was also an important factor in the creative process. Each piece in the collection prioritises the wearer's mobility and comfort, ensuring pieces are wearable. Silhouette is used in order to both emphasise and disrupt the wearer's form.

Conceptually, the collection was inspired by the artists and art scene in Downtown Manhattan, NYC during the late 70s and early 80s. In particular, the works and lives of John-Michele Basquiat, Keith Haring, Lisa Lyon, Marcus Leatherdale, Susan Sontag, Tseng Kwong Chi, Fab 5 Freddy and Robert Mapplethorpe were hugely influential.

Edo Bertoglio’s New York Beat Movie, now titled “Downtown 81” set the scene aesthetically for the collection. In particular, the scenes of Jean-Michele Basquiat walking the streets, painting in hand, captured the feeling that Morgan wanted to channel and make real in this collection. Morgan was hugely moved and inspired by the artists of the scene as they bravely followed their intuition from an artistic stand point and fought for equality of race, sexuality, gender and identity as a whole despite all of the challenges thrown against them. The collection has been named "The Downtown Collection" in honour of these artists and their contemporaries.

A list of garments included in the collection is as follows: Camel Jacket, Camel Turtleneck, Hounds Tooth Skirt, High Waisted Trousers, Forest Green Base Layer, Bleach Marle Base Layer and Dungarees.

This collection is dedicated to Morgan's parents, Shân and Roland, who's love and support has always been an incredibly powerful constant in Morgan's life.
